Recently, my brother completed Dave Ramsey's financial counseling courses in Nashville, Tennessee. He is now the only certified Dave Ramsey financial counselor within a 50-mile radius of Manchester, Tennessee. He's usually the one I run to when I want some sort of advice regarding my financial decisions.
Today, I questioned him about the whole grocery shopping experience. He informed me of different ways I can go about finding coupons. I've never been into coupons. To me, it always seemed to take up more time than what it was worth to clip them and sort them out. But, according to him, the Sunday newspaper has the most coupons in it, and I can also find free coupons to print off online. He couldn't remember the URL of the sites where I can find these free coupons to print off, but he says they exist.
Of course, he also told me to make sure I always make out a grocery list and take it with me when I go shopping. He also told me to put a certain amount of money aside each week in an envelope, and when I go shopping, I take that envelope only. That way, I can only spend what's in the envelope, therefor only spending my grocery money I budgeted out for the week.
Since many people are having the issue of things getting tight, I wanted to inform you of the little bit of financial advice I received regarding groceries. I also wanted to ask for a little of your help.
I decided to attempt to create what I like to call a "poor man's menu." You've all heard of the poor man's steak, right? Fried bologna? Yea, that's it. Or at least that's what I was always taught. Anywho, I wanted to collect a list of recipes for a "poor man's menu." This is where you guys come in. I've never been real creative in the kitchen. So far my menu consists of Ramen noodles and poor man's steak.
So, what are your creative ideas for a poor man's meal? Or poor woman, whatever you wanna call it. :)
Another FYI for all you broke individuals out there... After speaking with my brother, I also learned of a website called E-Mealz, which plans your whole week of meals out for you along with a grocery list of what you need for each meal. It's only $1.25 a week or $5 a month. You can choose a variety of different meal plans. My favorite is the Wal-Mart plan because that's where I shop. The plan figures up what Wal-Mart has on sale or special for the week and puts those items into meal format for the entire week. Supposedly each grocery list/meal plan it provides you should only cost you $80 a week at the grocery store-max price. Of course, after looking at one of the meal plans, many of the items on the grocery list I already have in my cabinets so that particular $79 grocery list would really only cost me about $50-$60 at the store.
Also, if you know where I can find the free coupons to print off online, that'd be GREAT. :) Thanks! I also plan on posting recipes for the "poor man's menu" in a separate blog if anyone has anything they'd like to contribute. :) I know many of us could stand to save a few pennies here and there. :) And, if we can all come up with creative ways to make cheap meals, it'd be great .:)
